What does general dentistry include?

Regular checkups and cleanings help us catch a small cavity or a cracked filling while it's still a quick fix. Our general dentistry covers checkups and cleanings, fillings, root canals, crowns and bridges, wisdom tooth removal, and frenectomies, without a referral to another office.

Cleanings and exams, explained as we go

Your hygienist reviews your medical history, screens for oral cancer and gives your teeth a thorough, gentle cleaning. Check-up x-rays are digital, and AI software helps read them, so we can point out what we find on a screen beside you. You'll leave knowing what's healthy and what to watch.

Preventive care that keeps small problems small

  • Sealants:

A thin coating seals the deep grooves of back teeth, a common step for kids.

  • Gum care:

Laser therapy and Arestin treat gum disease below the gumline.

  • Mouthguards:

Custom nightguards protect teeth from grinding, and sports mouthguards protect them during games and practice.

  • Fillings:

Tooth-coloured composite repairs cavities, and we can replace older silver fillings.

Root canals, for a tooth that's infected or inflamed

A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, then cleans and seals it so you can keep the tooth. You might need one if a toothache lingers, a tooth stays sensitive to hot or cold, or the gum nearby swells. We use rotary instruments, and most treated teeth then get a crown for strength.

Crowns and bridges, for teeth that need rebuilding or replacing

  • Porcelain crowns:

A crown covers a cracked or worn tooth, or one weakened after a root canal, and restores its shape.

  • Inlays and onlays:

These repair damage too large for a filling but not large enough for a crown.

  • Bridges:

A bridge fills a gap by anchoring a replacement tooth to the teeth on either side.

When the teeth beside a gap are healthy, an implant can replace the missing tooth without reshaping them.

Wisdom teeth removal, without a referral

Wisdom teeth that are impacted, partly erupted or crowding your bite can lead to pain and infection. We remove them in our office, and surgical extractions are a clinical interest of Dr. Quan's. For teens, an exam and x-rays help decide when removal makes sense, if it's needed at all.

Frenectomies for babies, children and adults

You might notice a baby struggling to latch, or a child who can't lift the tongue very far. A tight tongue or lip tie can make nursing, speaking or eating harder.

A frenectomy releases that band of tissue. We use a laser, which usually means less bleeding and a quicker recovery, and we treat every age.

Emergency dental care, for when a tooth problem can't wait

Maybe a toothache kept you up last night, or a crown came loose at dinner. We hold same-day emergency appointments during office hours, and you don't need to be an existing patient.

  • Severe toothache or facial swelling
  • Chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth
  • Lost filling or loose crown
  • Bleeding or pain after a mouth injury

If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room first.

A free ride in the chair lets young children get comfortable before any treatment.

Costs and coverage for general dentistry

Most workplace benefits plans cover checkups, cleanings and x-rays, and many pay part of fillings, root canals and crowns. We bill your plan directly, and as a CDCP provider we bill the Canadian Dental Care Plan directly too. For larger work like a crown, we can send a predetermination so you know your share first.
