Dental Crown Services
Dental crowns can be thought of as “covers” or “caps” that are placed over teeth to improve shape, alignment, appearance, and strength.
Your Willow Dental dentist may recommend that you undergo dental crown treatment in the event that a tooth is particularly weak (due to decay) as a means to:
- Prevent it from breaking down any further
- Repair a tooth that is already broken
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen or discoloured
There are several different types of crowns, including ceramic, porcelain, resin and stainless steel. When properly taken care of, dental crowns can last for as many as 15 years.
Inlays and onlays are a mix of dental fillings and crowns used to restore large cavities. Inlays and onlays cover different areas of the tooth, respectively.
What to Expect from Your Dental Crown Procedure
A dental crown treatment typically takes two appointments to complete.
During your first appointment, we will evaluate whether your tooth can support a crown. We’ll then begin shaping it down in preparation for the crown. We may also need to fill the tooth in the case of severely damaged or broken teeth.
We may also take a digital impression so that the permanent crown can be made in its shape. You will have a temporary crown until then. Once the permanent crown is ready, you can schedule your second appointment.
At that point, the temporary crown will be replaced with the permanent crown, which will be fastened to your tooth. After a little bit of time, your crown will function and look like a regular tooth.
